Break Away from the Grab-and-Go

As a twenty-something-year-old student juggling work, classes, internships, and friends, I need a space to simultaneously unwind and tackle my ever-growing workload, a refuge that combines the comforts of home with the structure of a classroom. Coffee shops provide the idyllic setting for me to write, relax, and recharge with delicious cups of freshly brewed coffee. Luckily, most major cities offer a plethora of such retreats for busy, young professionals to grab-and-go if they’re on the run, or to sit, sip, and collect their thoughts.

If you're visiting the Boston area, one of my favorite new finds is Render Coffee Co. in Symphony. With its airy, naturally lit back sun room, free Wi-Fi, and the earthy beats of Bonobo playing softly in the background, Render creates an organic space that frazzled students won’t want to leave quickly. Nor would they be able to. The shop offers hand poured coffee, which involves brewing each cup to order through a manual filtration system. The process takes about five minutes, but is well worth the wait. Owner Chris Dadey explains, “I wanted to break away from the grab-and-go concept and create a space where people can come and relax,” he says. “I don’t have a problem with customers coming in and sitting at a table for a couple hours.”

Next time you’re breezing along the brick-lined streets of Symphony, allow yourself to be seduced by the scent of freshly roasted brew through Render’s front door. Soak in the sunlight from the back deck, nibble on a freshly baked goat cheese and spinach quiche, (or any of their locally sourced bakery items), and allow your mind to detox from the day's stress. And, of course, be sure enjoy some Columbian “La Golodrina” pour-over coffee while you "pour over" your books. Or just enjoy the coffee.
