Turn Your Kitchen into a Spa

If it were up to me, I would spend every weekend in a spa. Think about how you would look and feel with limitless facials, pedicures, body scrubs, massages… The possibilities for indulgence are endless. My bank account, however, is not – so I survive those terrible months between spa visits with DIY treatments. Here are three easy ones: you’d be surprised how simple and inexpensive it is – and how many ingredients you already have in your kitchen.

Enliven Your Skin
Chocolate is rich with antioxidants, and caffeine wakes up your skin the same way it does your mind. This coffee-cocoa face mask reduces puffiness in the eye area, brightens your skin tone and enlivens dull complexions. Mix four tablespoons each of coffee grounds (can be instant coffee) and unsweetened cocoa powder with about half a cup of a liquid of your choice. Dry complexions should choose yogurt or coconut oil, and add a spoonful of honey. Oily complexions should use milk, coconut milk or egg white, and add a dash of lemon juice. Use as much or as little liquid as you like, but use less with oil than you would with another mix. Let the mask sink in for 20 minutes, then towel off with a wet washcloth and wash your face as usual.

Cool the Burn
Too much time in the sun? A homemade cooling mask will take the redness and sting out of your skin. Take a single-serve container of plain Greek (or regular) yogurt, and mix in either a tablespoon of honey (for dry skin) or slightly less than a teaspoon of lime juice (for oily). Let it sit for 15 minutes and rinse off. Safe for face and body use.

Smooth Out the Rough Spots
A simple but much overlooked trick for home exfoliation is to use the citric acid in lemons to smooth out rough skin. Cut a lemon in half and rub it on your problem spots, like heels and elbows. The acids speed up cellular turnover, revealing smoother skin underneath. The same trick can be used to fix self-tanner mishaps. Rub half a lemon (or pure lemon juice with a facecloth) over dark spots to even them out.
